In past years, there were four string instruments that students were able to choose from: the violin, viola, cello and string bass.
The violin: The violin is the smallest of the string instruments. The violin is the highest sounding instrument in the string family. The instrument has a brighter sound and is a very popular instrument. It is played by drawing a bow across the strings using the right hand with the body of the instrument being supported by the shoulder and chin. The fingers of the left hand are used to stop the strings to create different notes.
The viola: The viola is larger than the violin. The viola is lower sounding and has a more mellow sound. Like the violin it is played by drawing a bow across the strings using the right hand with the body of the instrument being supported by the shoulder and chin. The cello: The cello is larger than the viola, and is lower sounding than both the violin and viola. The darker smoother tone of the cello makes it a beautiful instrument and a popular choice for students to learn. The cello is unique because it is played in a seated position with the body of the instrument steadied by an endpin in the floor and the knees of the player.
The string bass: The bass is the largest instrument of the string family, and it is also the lowest sounding instrument. Because of the size of the bass, the player stands to play it. The bass functions as a rhythmic accompaniment in an orchestra that gives the foundation for the sound.
