WGSD Rec Soccer – Don’t Miss It!

Do you have a son or daughter entering 4K this year? How about grades K – 5? One opportunity that families near Waterford should be sure to experience is the youth soccer program. Year after year hundreds of Waterford area kids take to the fields behind Evergreen on Saturday mornings and begin a wonderful journey. There is both a spring and a fall season.

For just $60 players get a T-shirt, a parent coach, the start of lifelong friendships, and a low-pressure introduction to the incredible game of soccer. Having coached my own kids from 4K through 5th grade I can’t emphasize enough what a great opportunity this program offers local kids. This program can complete one’s soccer experience or it can be a stepping stone to the “travel” teams found in neighboring communities. Too much too quick sometimes backfires. My advice: Start slow, keep it fun, and make it last!

The registration deadline is quickly approaching so please don’t wait. You can sign up online by clicking HERE.

Parent Coaches Needed – You Can Do It!

What? You didn’t play college soccer? What? Not even high school soccer? No worries, all you need is the desire to create a safe and fun experience for your son or daughter and their teammates. When I started coaching WGSD rec soccer I didn’t even know the rules of the game, but I did understand the need for parents to do their best and help make the program a positive experience. If you are curious about it or would consider coaching just let the program know you would be interested in giving coaching a try. If they already have enough head coaches, offer to help out as an assistant, the head coach will appreciate it.

Fortunately, there are tons of coaching aids and video clips available online on how to run soccer drills with your team. At the 4K and other young levels it really comes down to two things thing – 1) did they have fun and 2) how many times did their foot touch the ball? OK, there is a little more to it, but not much. Here are a few simple videos.

Here is one more, but there are thousands…

Let’s get those kids on the field and interacting with each other in a safe environment. The deadline is Monday, August 23rd. The Department website says:
Register under the grade your child will be in for the 2021-2022 School Year.
Practice Days will be on weeknights.
Game Dates: September 18, 25 October 2, 9, 16, 23
